Alcantara Bridge

The Alcantara Bridge in Toledo has a history that dates back to Roman times, though the original construct was destroyed. The name Alcantara is taken from the time of Moorish occupation when it was rebuilt (854AD) though subsequently destroyed again in 1257AD by flooding. King Alfonso X of Spain ordered its reconstruction the following year and it has stood ever since. The bridge is defended at the end nearest the city by a fortified tower; it's opposite was replaced by a grand baroque archway in 1721.
