Alcazar The Alcazar is the palatial fortification built by King Alfonso XI of Spain on the site of the former residence of the Caliph of Cordoba. During Moorish rule this was the centre of the empire and so it seemed suitable that it should be a residence for Christian kings also. In later years Spain's monarchs (Isabel and Ferdinand) lived here for eight years. Though parts of the building were indeed very comfortable it was primarily built as a fortification, a role it proved itself worthy of on more than one occasion. Surrounding the Alcazar castle itself are beautiful gardens and a charming Moorish bath-house. Under Moorish occupation the grounds were much more expansive, but were given away and built upon after the Christian re-conquest. The Alcazar in Cordoba benefits from being considered part of historic Cordoba; listed by UNESCO as being a world heritage site. Cordoba Tourist Office TEL +34 957 491678 FAX +34 957 475485
