Aljaferia Palace The Aljaferia Palace was the heart of Zaragoza in the 11th century. The city was then the centre of an independent Moorish empire ruled by the Beni Kasim dynasty; and housed the royal court and official residence, as well as doubling as the city's main fortification or castle. A magnificent example of Arab architecture it predates the Alhambra in Granada and is widely thought to be the largest and most prominent Moorish monument outside of Andalucia. Though the Aljaferia retains it's quadrangular plan and Moorish appearance much of it's interior was adapted by the Christian Kings of Aragon after the re-conquest of Zaragoza. Visitors will find a mix of styles present, with Moorish patios, plaster-work, and architectural design mixed in with Aragonese features such as the elaborate throne room, staircases, coffered ceilings, and more. In recent times part of the building has been given over to housing the offices of the Aragonese parliament, though the majority of the Aljaferia is open to the public.
