Almunecar

Almunecar is the most popular tourist destination on the Costa Tropical, though today it is most visited by Spanish nationals during the summer season. It is located  in the province of Granada, which in turn is in the autonomous region of Andalucia. Though not nearly as well known as some of the resorts on the neighbouring Costa del Sol, it does offer a particularly picturesque seafront with 19 kilometres of sandy beaches. Here the mountains slope right down to the water, creating a series of coves & a panoramic backdrop.

The town is home to a resident population of around 15,000 people, & is seated atop a hill looking out across the Mediterranean sea. To its west there lays a forested area which is home to several up-market residential zones, & the Marina del Este port; to the east there is a fertile valley consisting mainly of fruit orchards.

The town of Almunecar has been around for almost 3,000 years; being founded by the Phoenicians as a trading port. Various important peoples including the Romans & the Moors followed, each leaving their mark. Evidence can be seen of this today in the form of the Roman fish market & Aqueduct, & in the fine Moorish castle that overlooks the town. All are open to the public, alongside numerous other attractions. For those looking to venture farther afield there is the city of Granada with its ancient Moorish origins (including the infamous Alhambra citadel) & the Sierra Nevada; Spain's southernmost ski resort & the location for several beautiful national parks.

In recent years Almunecar has expanded its resident international community, though not nearly as much as towns in other parts of Andalucia. The fact that it is still mainly visited by Spanish nationals has had some bearing on this. As such the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive, & many fiestas (festivals) take place throughout the year. The cuisine is another major bonus with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside the middle to high end restaurants.

The climate in Almunecar is welcoming for the vast majority of the year. It boasts average highs of 30°C (86°F) during the summer months & 15-20°C during the winter season. However it must be noted that temperatures drop significantly at altitude. Since much of the region is high above sea level, those visiting areas other than the coast should take this into consideration.
