Arucas is a large town in Northern Gran Canaria. Close to the islands Capital, Las Palmas just separated by the Barranco de Tenoya, a ravine. The town is rich in historical buildings that mostly represent the nineteenth century within the town, including the most dominating building of all in Arucas - Parish Church of San Juan Bautista, also known as the - Cathedral of Arucas! The town is also known as the 'City of Rum' for the Rum it produces there. Founded in 1884, the Fábrica y Museo del Ron produces over 3.5 million litres of that delicious sugar cane rum every year, there is a museum at the factory, which makes for an interesting visit - here you can learn how the rum is made, the history of the factory and even see a few celebrity signed barrels!

The nightlife in Arucas is very Canarian / Spanish, like many other villages and towns in the Canaries, very relaxed - ideal if you like to sit until the early hours in a restaurant with the family or outside a bar watching the world go by. Most bars and Restaurants are open till late - if you are wanting to party the night you will be able to find a few places to do that here!!! The many bars and restaurants that you will find in Arucas are mostly Spanish, their are not many tourist places, although everyone is very friendly and welcoming!

The Cathedral of Arucas is a magnificent building, constructed over several stages, it started in 1909 and was finally completed in 1977. It is built with lava-stone and has a tower that is sixty metres high! That is the highest in all of the Canary Islands Archipelago. Inside you will find amazing stained glassed windows and retable as well as a sculpture of Cristo Yacente, which means; the wrestling Christ, which is the work of a local artist. The Parish Church of San Juan Bautista, was designed by the Catalan architect Manuel Vega March.

There are three more wonderful buildings within the town that have great architectural value and beauty. Two of which are in the constitution square - Plaza de la Constitucion, here you will find the Town Hall which was built in 1875 ad the Municipal Market which is great because of its sheer size. The other building is along a street nearby to the square, the Heredad de Aguas de  Arucas y Firgas, which was built in 1908 and is thought the most beautiful building of all in the town, it is now home to the Water board.

Close to Arucas, about one mile north the Mountain - Montana de Arucas, this is the highest peak in the city, with a height of 412 metres. At the top you will find a restaurant, that serves Canarian food and drinks, there you will be able to sit and enjoy unbelievable panoramic views over the island!

If you are planning an active holiday, as you can see there is lots to do in Arucas, from Museums, Churches, Gardens - Jardin de Hesperides in the towns square, wonderful views, the fiestas and carnivals that are held there including the spectacular - Patron Saint San Juan Bautista in June and plenty more! There is also plenty of places for you to visit and things to do in the rest of Gran Canaria! Including the Water parks, of which there are three all located in the south of the Island and close by to the resort, Aquasur, Ocean Park and Aqua Park. There is also theme and amusement parks, which include; Palmitos Park which is a subtropical oasis and Zoo, Holiday World which is a leisure and amusement park and Mundo Aborigen Located overlooking the Barranco de Fataga, which is the biggest and most dramatic gorge on the island, The Mundo Aborigen is a reconstruction of an ancient Canary village devoted entirely to the Guanche way of life. Cocodrilo Park - a Crocodile Park, this is a park that is devoted to adopting ill treated animals, buying them privately and from circuses, it started with just a few crocodile and now they have the  largest collections in Europe! Among the animals are also, Monkeys and Tigers, it is family run and its proceeds from the entry fee go to the upkeep of the park! Cactualdea - a cactus park, Reptilandia Park - Reptile Park, Pueblo Canario - a Canary Village, where you can experience true Canarian Culture.

When visiting Gran Canaria it is a must to go exploring the island you will see many wonderful views and scenery, in the mountains, forests, coastal and spectacular beaches or sand dunes!

All of these fantastic days out and sightseeing tourist attractions are easily accessible, whether you hire a car and explore in your own private group or perhaps take an excursion, which you can organise through a tour operator or you should be able to find a company that does these excursions in the centre of the resort.

There is Apartments and villas that available to rent for your holiday, in Arucas, in this town you should be able to find whatever you want - whether you are looking for a  basic property somewhere just to lay your head a night or luxurious with an abundance of facilities! Properties range in size and shape, from studio's or one bedroom apartments, if there are just the two of you to three bedroom - normally sleeping up 8 if your taking the family or going in a big group, or one bedroom villas and bungalows up to 6 bedroom villas!

There are Companies that rent these properties out, but also there is private rentals, where people that have bought the property for holiday homes and when they are not there using it they will rent it out for your exclusive use! Some of these properties can be set in privately owned complexes, where locals live! Most come with communal swimming pools too, and these are normally quieter due to the fact it isn't full of holiday makers and is more residencial. A word of warning though these are quieter and normally better for families or older groups than the young tourists!!!
