Barcelona City Zones Like most ancient cities Barcelona grew naturally. Its Roman centre was built upon & extended in medieval times, with many streets following the same paths as their predecessors. With time the old city walls were outgrown, & large scale expansion & development projects were undertaken. In more modern times suburb style residential areas were expanded, often swallowing nearby towns. Finally improvements made to the public transport system has lead to booming population levels in the so called regional commuter towns. Thankfully Barcelona has managed to retain much of it's heritage. For information on specific central zones please see the below links: -
Ciutat Vella - The oldest part of the city, incorporating other central zones it houses the majority of Barcelona's main sights & attractions... Barri Gotic - The city's surprisingly intact Gothic quarter & home to many urban palaces, museums, churches, the city cathedral, & much more... L'Eixample - The result of the urban extension project spurred by the rocketing population levels resulting from Barcelona's industrialisation. This area houses the vast majority of Barcelona's modernist attractions... La Barceloneta - A residential area constructed in the 18th century. It forms the old fishermans quarter for the city & is located around the Port Vell harbour in central Barcelona... Barri de Gracia - Once a town in its own right it was swallowed by Barcelona in 1897, transforming it into a Barri (quarter) of the Catalan capital. Expect to find narrow winding streets, period low rise housing, & plenty of cafes & bars... La Rambla - Barcelona's most famous, & busiest street. Partly pedestrianised it cuts through the city from Plaça Catalunya to the Port Vell harbour. Here are many museums, art galleries, urban palaces, squares, & even a red light district... Passeig de Gracia - An impressive five kilometre long city street flanked by the best hotels, restaurants, shops, & many sights & attractions...
