Barcelona Culture Barcelona is a cosmopolitan, modern, & fashionable city with a rich cultural heritage. It's reputation as a world centre for art, architecture, & design is well estabished; offering a wide array of cultural activies & attractions. Architectural genius is evident throughout the city centre, with beautiful medieval constructs mixed in with modernist works by Gaudi (Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, etc) & his contemporaries. No less than eight city buildings have made it onto the UNESCO world heritage list, & the city received acclaim in 1999 from the Institute of British Architects when it was awarded the prestigious Royal Gold Medal for Architecture. Barcelona's art scene is also flourishing, & with painters like Pablo Picasso & Joan Miro once resident here there are plenty of masterpeices & paintings by famous artists displayed in the city's galleries & museums. A good place to start would be the Picasso Museum or indeed the Miro Foundation, which both house extensive collections of their respective artists work. Plenty of other venues spatter the city, some with entirely unique offerings. The performing arts are also popular in Barcelona, & a host of classical music, theatre, opera, & dance events are usually running. There are numerous venues dotted around Barcelona with the largest & most spectacular being the Palau de la Musica Catalana, an elaborately designed concert hall worth a visit in itself.
