Barcelona Historic Attractions Barcelona's past dates back thousands of years, leaving it with a rich cultural heritage, & much to preserve. Added to this is the city's architectural uniqueness (in particular the modernist areas), & the high quantity of acclaimed artists that have resided here (Picasso, Miro etc). The result is that there are a lot of museums & galleries present, covering a wide range of subject matter. They are on the whole well run & affordable. Sagrada Familia - One of Barcelona's most poignant symbols, & the city's tourist attraction with the highest visitor numbers. Though left unfinished, it is also the life work of accredited architect Antoni Gaudi. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site... La Pedrera - A fantastic building with an unusual undulating facade, many arches, & a staggered roof with strangely shaped chimneys & vents. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site... Palau Guell - One of Gaudi's first big undertakings & in it can be seen much of his early creative genius. It shows clear desire to combine the structural & decorative parts of architecture. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site... Roman Barcelona - Various Roman remains from the old settlement of Colonia Julia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino (or Barcino for short) peppered around the older parts of town... Barcelona Cathedral - Undoubtedly an impressive building, & the heart of Barcelona's religious community. Another main draw for the crowds is its art collection, dating from 1300's to the 1700's... Barcelona University - Founded in 1450, though its current building was not inaugurated until 1871. It has played an important in the city for many hundreds of years, & still continues to do so... Santa Maria del Mar Church - One of the most visually appealing religious buildings in the city. Externally it is the only perfectly finished Catalan Gothic church, however it is the church's interior that is most impressive... Palau de la Musica Catalana - A great expression of modernist architecture, a work of art, & one of the world's most elaborate & acclaimed music venues. Also declared a UNESCO world heritage site... Columbus Monument - Built to celebrate the achievements of Christopher Columbus the column was designed by Gaieta Buigas i Monrava, & is 51 metres tall. Visitors can go up the monument in a lift to enjoy excellent panoramic views of the city... Port Vell - Barcelona's oldest harbour area with lots of character & charm. Also the site for the Barcelona '92 Olympic facilities yard (one of the best on the Mediterranean), the Maritime Museum, & many other entertainment installations, dining options, & retail outlets... Catalunya Square - Located between the Eixample & Ciutat Vella (old town) areas, near the top end of the La Rambla boulevard; the square itself is enormous, spanning over 50,000 square metres. Surrounding it are many grand imposing buildings... Reial Square - A charming 19th century square, & one of the city's most beautiful. The Plaza Reial is a popular meeting point for Barcelona's young. A lively place it boasts a good selection of bars & eateries, & is an excellent place to visit during the daytime or in the evening... Kings Square - One of Barcelona's most prized squares, it was once an important business centre for Barcelona & is surrounded by ancient buildings, prized by many for their architectural quality... Sant Jaume Square - An important part of Barcelona since Roman times. Important government buildings were to be found here then, as they are today. This attractive square took its present form in 1840... Espanya Square - Once the main entrance to the city, & public hangings were held here with the corpses displayed to ward off criminal types. Today the Plaza de Espanya is dominated by its central fountain, designed in modernist style by Josep Maria Jujol...
