Barcelona Shopping The chic & stylish nature of Barcelona is reflected in its shops; & there are enough high end retail outlets to keep those interested for weeks, alongside an abundance of high street offerings, markets, & department stores. A main shopping zone has been implemented; essentially a partly pedestrainised line of streets with many boutiques, chain stores, & department stores lining it. It stretches from the top of the La Rambla boulevard, through Plaza de Catalunya, along the Passeig de Gracia, & up the Avenida Diagonal. If you are looking for some Spanish style traditional shops then visit the area around Carrer de Ferran, between La Rambla & Via Laietana. For markets one of the best places to head is the Boqueria market held just off the La Rambla early in the morning. Large shopping centres can be found dotted around the city, with one of the largest (the Maremagnum) located next to Port Vell harbour. Finally Barri Gotic (the Gothic quarter) plays host to some of the city's less defineable shops, selling everything from antiques, to funky clothes, & second hand goods. One thing worth mentioning about shopping in Barcelona is its hours. Although the largest stores will tend to open from 8am-8pm Monday-Sunday the rest of the city conforms to the customary closing for siesta. As such the best times for shopping in Barcelona are from 9am-1.30pm & 5pm-8pm, with many outlets closed or closing early on a Sunday.
