Barri de Gracia Barri de Gracia was once a town in its own right, taking its name from a farmhouse located not too far away from the walls of old Barcelona. As the years went by & Barcelona prospered the city grew well beyond its borders, engulfing Gracia in 1897 & essentially transforming it into a Barri (district or quarter) of the Catalan capital. The streets of the Barri de Gracia are narrow & winding, with small typical squares dotted here & there. Contrastingly with the rest of Barcelona it's buildings are relatively low rise; more than anything this is a sign of their age. Aside from its character & charm this part of Barcelona is most famous for it's August fiesta (festival), & for Casa Vicens (one of Gaudi's first works). The Gracia area is also very lively, boasting a high number of bars, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, & the like. The path that originally linked the old farmhouse of Gracia with Barcelona came to be known as the Passeig de Gracia. In the 18th century the lower part of this was transformed into an avenue bordered with trees & fountains, & in the 19th century the street was fully urbanised & made five lanes wide. By the middle of the 19th century the avenue was the most fashionable place in Barcelona, & today it remains a delightful part of the city; five kilometres in length & with a multitude of urban palaces, modernist buildings, & expensive hotels.
