Basilica del Pilar One important attraction is the Basilica del Pilar; widely thought to be one of the greatest religious constructs in Spain. Designed in the later part of the 17th century it was not constructed until the 1760's. It is a truly monumental building, with huge corner towers surrounding a large central dome and several smaller ones. Their decorative design, at least in part, was designed by the artist Goya. The Cathedral is a pilgrimage site for many Catholics as the Virgin Mary is said to have descended from heaven here in an apparition before James the Apostle. The pillar, on to which she is said to have descended, is the centerpiece of the building and features an effigy of the virgin atop it. Another striking feature of the interior is the magnificent baroque altarpiece, which is intricately detailed. Also located here are a small museum, and a viewing gallery in one of the main towers, though there is a charge for entry to both attractions. The Basilica del Pilar is one of two Cathedrals in the city, and if you only have time to visit one you should come here.
