Benicassim The coastal town of Benicassim is situated to the north of Valencia on the Costa del Azahar. It has a population of around 15,000 people, however during the summer months Benicassim swells with an influx of tourists bringing this figure up considerably. Benicassim is best known for being an upmarket Mediterranean destination and for its International Music Festival, widely considered to be an important indie music event. The town itself is a pretty place with a well preserved town center and many kilometers of sandy beaches. Though of Moorish descent (which is clearly evident in its name) Benicassim is distinguished from other towns on the coast due to the high number of manorial style villas present. When the railway line was built at the end of the 19th century the wealthy classes of Valencia chose the town as a popular site to build summer retreats. The villas are built in varying styles, from Victorian, to classical, and modern. Benicassim has largely managed to retain this upmarket image and so remains a favourite haunt for Spain's more affluent crowd. Benicassim's suburbs are (as with other towns) a sprawl of privately owned apartments and other property types. At present these are mainly owned by Spanish nationals though recent years have brought increased interest from overseas investors. Benicassim is also well known for its mild climate and enjoys sunshine for in excess of 300 days per year. The sun is at its hottest during the summer months, with temperatures rarely falling below 30°C (86°F). Winters are typically very mild with average highs hovering at around 17°C.
