Blanes The Mediterranean town of Blanes is situated at the mouth of the river Tordera & is the southernmost town of the Costa Brava, & Girona province. It is a town with a history & has retained much heritage; if not quite to the same extent as nearby towns like Roses or perhaps Tossa de Mar. Today it is a popular tourist haunt for Spaniards, with many visitors travelling here each summer from all over the country & the rest of Europe. Blanes' continued popularity has a lot to do with it's many kilometres of blue flag sandy beaches flanked by countryside of outstanding beauty. Prior to the 1950's the town of Blanes relied heavily on fishing for it's economy. The arrival of the tourist trade changed all this with the town population doubling between 1955 & 1970. Many hotel & apartment complexes were built along the seafront, which today remains the major attraction here boasting three blue flag beaches. Blanes' also prides itself in offering it's visitors a taste of real Spain, with traditional fiestas & street markets taking place, as well as a vibrant family friendly atmosphere in the evenings. Looking beyond Blanes itself the surrounding countryside is an attraction in it's own right. This varied terrain is ideal for farming, while at the same time favoured amongst those who travel to the area to participate in adventure sports, from hiking & mountain biking to rock climbing & skiing. In recent years Blanes has expanded its resident community, with a steady influx of ex-pats arriving from other European countries & second home owners from other parts of Spain. However the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive & many fiestas (or festivals) take place throughout the town calendar. The cuisine is another major bonus with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside middle to high end restaurants. Shopping opportunities also exist; ranging from souvenir shops selling local goods & handicrafts to fashion outlets. The climate in Blanes is in the main welcoming all year round. With average highs of 31°C during the summer months & 16°C in the winter, it is possible to enjoy an outdoor life at any time of the year. However be aware during the winter season low temperatures can be a good deal cooler than in Spain's southern regions.
