Welcome to Cala d'Or Tourist Information

Along the southern east coast of Majorca / Mallorca you will find the lovely 'upmarket' resort of Cala d'Or.  Cala d'Or was once a small traditional Mallorcan fishing village although it has now grown to a modern purpose built resort.

Its mild temperatures and the low rain rate make of this island a perfect beach destination. The tourist season begins in May and ends in October. In Summer the average temperature is 23º Celsius. Rain is an almost unknown phenomenon during Summer, it’s not often you even see a cloudy day. The rainy season is throughout the Winter, but even then rain is not common, especially in the South of the Island!

The airport, Son Sant Joan is situated in the south of the islands, just outside the capital, Palma. The island is small so transfer time from the airport to Cala d'Or resort is about an hour one and a half to two hours and will cost about 70€ by taxi. Flight to Mallorca is only between 2 to 2 and a half hours from the UK. As you are flying into Majorca, the first landmark you will see on the final approach before landing will be the magnificent 14th Century Gothic cathedral at nearby Palma, and the sight of it from the air never ceases to take your breath away.

Over the years the resort has expanded, and now covers an area of over 4km of small sandy coves and creeks. In all fairness though, this growth has for the most part been controlled, and the town still has the feeling of a small village with few, if any, high rise buildings.

Cala Llonga, is the largest of these coves and has been developed into a large marina which effectively splits the resort into two. This makes the walk between the two parts very long  and unless either have a car or you fancy that walk or maybe even a daily ride in the tourist mini train then you are pretty much isolated to whichever half of the town you have chosen to stay in.

Cala Gran is the focal point of the town, it is the pedestrian zone around that area, within this area there are a wide varied selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

Cala d'Or really lacks many of the other family attractions such as water parks, mini golf etc. which a lot of holiday makers would expect to find in a holiday resort nowadays. Although there are a few on the island which you will find about an hour's drive away.

If a beach holiday is what you are planning, then there are a few beaches close by and within Cala d'Or. Cala Gran Beach is the largest in the town, although at just 40m wide and 100m deep it can't really be described as being large! Close to hear is Cala d'Or, this is what the resort takes its name from. This is a small but crowded beach with a pine fringed cove. All the usual amenities including; Sun loungers, parasols and pedaloes can be hired at both beaches. You will also find around 8 or 9 other smaller sandy coves in the area, although these can become extremely crowded in high season. If you fancy a day away from the resort of the beaches here become to crowded then a lot of tourist take a trip to beautiful beach of Es Trenc, there is a morning bus that takes you there and it truly is a lovely beach. The beach is made up of clear blue water and golden sand, which is backed by pine trees and dunes and stretches for almost 5km along the south eastern coast of the island. Here you will find a small bar-restaurant where you can hire sun umbrellas and loungers, but there isn't many other facilities and the beach rarely gets packed with sun worshippers! One word of warning though parts of this beach is nudist.

As with all of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca / Majorca are excellent for all kinds of watersports. Tourists flock here throughout the year and try there hand at the popular sports such as diving, of there are many centres that can teach you and get your certificate, from beginner to advanced! Fishing, is another favourite, again you will find many companies or private charters around the ports in the main tourist resorts. These companies will take you out for the day for all sorts of fishing whether it be Big Game fishing or just normal they can provide assistance and generally these companies even put on a little picnic for you! Then there is sailing, windsurfing, skin divers and the usual tourist watersports; ringo's, para sailing, banana boats, water skiing and jet skiing!

Public transport around all of the east coast is not good, so you may wish to consider car hire if you want to see more of the island and go exploring for the day, the island is so magnificent with beauty that it will take your breath away! The little towns and villages are all easily accessible with decent roads throughout the island. Or alternatively you can easily pop over to Majorca's neighbour islands Ibiza and Menorca on one of the regular ferries, this can be another great day out and you get to see 2 islands on 1 holiday! A word of warning though if you have hired a car then check with the company before you go across to another island that you are insured as a lot of insurance will become void as soon as you cross the ferry!

Where you end up staying in Mallorca, I am sure you will have a fabulous holiday and find plenty or as little as you want to do!
