Carlisle, the great Border City has lived through many conflicts with armies and rebels the results of which influenced the destinies of both England and Scotland. Hadrians Wall spans nearly 2,000 years of history. A Roman biographer of Hadrian states that the wall was built to separate the Romans from the barbarians (not the Pics and the Scots they arrived later). Forts, museums and visitor centres appear all along the wall bringing Roman history to life . Birdoswald Roman Fort and Carlisle Visitor Centre boast a brand new multi media presentation illustrating many aspects of this testimony to Britains Roman occupation. The Hadrians Wall bus travels the route, calling at the friendly towns and villages along the way. The magnificent Carlisle Castle was founded in 1092 by William the Conquerers son and was once the prison of Mary, Queen of Scots. It is now home to the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment. The beauty and serenity of Lanercost Priory nearby, founded by Augustinian monks in 1169.and.tales of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce who ransacked the Priory in 1296. It is now the parish church of a large and sparsely populated rural area.. Not all our visitors are history bound. Many come for the simple pleasures the riverside strolls through Gelt Woods where the upland river has carved its way relentlessly through the huge red sandstone strata. Tel: 01228 625950 Hadrians Wall When Hadrian arrived in AD122 to defend his empires boundaries, he found marauding barbarians from the North so, to protect the region and the Roman citizens living in the South, he ordered a mighty wall to be built. It stretched across the narrowest part of the island, from the Solway Firth in the west, to the North Sea in the east, with a garrison of at least eight Roman soldiers occupying every mile-castle. Between mile-castles there were two equidistant turrets where sentries kept watch Now the northern tribesmen could still trade but no longer loot and burn. Interestingly, there is little evidence of major conflict on Hadrians Wall. Hadrians Wall National Trail In 2002 Hadrians Wall National Trail was opened allowing you to walk where the legions once guarded the wall from coast to coast.. Carlisle Cumbria UK
