www.hadrians-wall.org Birdoswald is one of the best preserved and finest situated forts on Hadrian's Wall. It stands on a high spur of land within a broad meander of the River Irthing, and commands breath-taking views in all directions The site was occupied by the Romans for 300 years - from 122 AD-400 AD. The visitor centre was opened in 1993. The fort is now a major tourist attraction and visitors come from all over the world. It is especially popular on holiday weekends when enthusiatic historians don authentic Roman uniforms and re-enact ancient battles. | | Lanercost Priory
www.english-heritage.org.uk The building was founded on this site in 1166 as an Augustinian Monastic House. This was built from the stones of Hadrian's Wall on the nearby ridge. In 1296 the Scots over-ran the area and William Wallace (aka Mel Gibson) and Robert the Bruce ransacked the place. Today's visitors are less aggressive -- they come from America, Australia and Canada, arriving in the Cosmos holiday buses. A tour around the priory is a highlight of the Border regional trip. | | Hadrian's Wall
Hadrians Wall Hadrian's Wall ranks alongside the Taj Mahal as one of the great wonders of the world. It became a World Heritage Site in 1993. It spans nearly 2,000 years of history, crosses dramatic and wild landscapes, and still graces towns and cities. Forts, museums and events bring Roman history to life. Walks along the wall lead you through spectacular countryside and time spent exploring this unique Roman construction in its ever-changing setting, will leave you with an unparalleled sense of awe and wonder. | | Naworth Castle
www.naworth.co.uk Naworth came to the Dacre family in 1317. It is an excellent site for defense with a steep fall on three sides and the Scottish border visible from the roof top. In 1520, Lord Dacre altered and added to the castle and in 1604 the castle was converted to a mansion. The great Hall is one of the most impressive in the North of England. The castle is now a centre for functions and conferences. | |
