Castellon The coastal city of Castellon (or in full Castellon de la Plana) is situated on the Mediterranean shores of the Costa del Azahar. It is the capital of the province of Castellon, itself part of the the autonomous community of Valencia and a popular tourist destination. Though the city of Castellon boasts a populace of 160,000 this number rises during the summer months, boosted mainly from an influx of visitors from more central parts of Spain and other parts of Europe. Castellon was officially founded in 1251 by King Jaime I of Aragon, after conquering the Moorish kingdom of Valencia. He moved the settlement from its high location near a Moorish castle to the plains (la Plana) near the coast where it sits today. In its new locale the town grew; walls, moats, and towers were also added during the middle ages. As Castellon took a position of prominence a grand church was built, later becoming a Cathedral. The city did not become a provincial capital until the 19th century, a time when the railway and expansion of the port area brought more work and population to the area. Castellon's long history has provided it with a number of interesting sights and attractions. Another major draw are the many kilometers of sandy beaches stretched along its shores. They are generally well maintained and many of them consistently win the European blue flag for cleanliness and the clarity of their waters. Castellon is also well known for its mild climate and enjoys sunshine for in excess of 300 days per year. The sun is at its hottest during the summer months, with temperatures rarely falling below 30°C (86°F). Winters are typically very mild with average highs hovering around 17°C.
