Clerecia Jesuit School and Church The Clerecia was granted to the religious order of the Jesuits by order of King Philip III of Spain towards the end of the 16th century. However amid violent protest over the appropriation of the land it was to occupy, the first stone was not laid until 1627. Furthermore the construct was not fully completed until 1755, and opened it's doors to the Jesuits for only two years before their expulsion in 1767. The construct actually consists of more than one building built around the beautiful Baroque Patio of Espiritu Santo. It's main edifice was intended as a Jesuit school, and boasts an immensely beautiful frontage known as the Facade of the Mercy; today it houses the Pontifical University. Also of interest at the site is the elaborate church and a magnificent baroque cloister. Salamanca Tourist Office TEL +34 923 268571 FAX +34 923 262492
