Columbus Monument Barcelona's Columbus Monument was first opened to the public on the 1st of June 1888, the year of the opening of the Universal Exposition. Its location separates the end of the La Rambla boulevard with the Port Vell harbour area in central Barcelona. Built to celebrate the achievements of Christopher Columbus the column was designed by Gaieta Buigas I Monrava, & is 51 metres tall. The statue of Columbus on the top has his index finger pointing symbolically towards the new world. Visitors can go up the monument in a lift to enjoy excellent panoramic views of the city.
