Costa Brava The Costa Brava is Spain's northern-most Mediterranean coastal region. Its name translates as the "rugged coast", & indeed the 200 kilometre long coastline is very varied; though it also boasts a multitude of clean sandy beaches that are ideal for tourist use & considered to be among the best in Spain. The countryside is equally praised, & includes lush meadowland, dense forest, & steep valleys, all flanked by the Pyrenees mountains. As a result several high profile Hollywood films were made here in the 1950's. It was this natural attraction that was first recognised back in the 1950's, when Spain's central government decided that the Costa Brava was an ideal location for development in order to attract tourism from northern Europe. Large numbers of hotels & apartment complexes were built, wide stretches of coastline adapted, & municipal facilities improved. Much of this work was undertaken in coastal towns such as Lloret de Mar & Tosa de Mar, where population increased rapidly (especially during the summer months), & fishing quickly fell behind tourism as the principal business. Today the Costa Brava attracts a high number of visitors, coming for a variety of reasons other than (though including) its much touted blue flag beaches. While parts of the coastline have been heavily developed, there are equally many smaller town & villages (both coastal & inland) which retain much of their culture, way of life, & relatively traditional appearance. In addition the region is flanked by the Pyrenees mountain range; itself a major attraction for hiking/walking holidays, as well as skiing & other adventure sports. In recent years the Costa Brava has also expanded its resident international community. This is largely due to residential tourism & the influx of ex pats from other European countries. However the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive, & many fiestas (festivals) take place throughout its calendar (some of which are a real spectacle & well worth a look). The cuisine is another major bonus, with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside the middle to high end restaurants. Plenty of shopping opportunities also exist; ranging from souvenirs, local goods & handicrafts, to designer label fashion & modern shopping centres. The climate in the Costa Brava is in the main welcoming all year round. With average highs of 29°C (82°F) in the summer months, & 13°C (55°F) in the winter, it is possible to enjoy an outdoor life at any time of the year. However low temperatures are a good deal cooler here than in Spain's southern regions, & during the winter season the Costa Brava experiences a lot more in the way of rainfall. This is especially the case with the towns/villages on higher ground leading up towards the Pyrenees mountains.
