Costa Brava Tourist / Tourism The Costa Brava has been popular since the 1950's. This was when Spain's central government decided that due to it's natural beauty & varied coastline (with many sandy coves), the Costa Brava was an ideal location for development in order to attract tourism from northern Europe. Large numbers of hotels & apartment complexes were built, wide stretches of coastline adapted, & municipal facilities improved. Much of this work was undertaken in coastal towns such as Lloret de Mar & Tosa de Mar, where population increased rapidly (especially during the summer months), & fishing quickly fell behind tourism as the principal business. At around the same time Hollywood studios were drawn to the area, & several high profile movies were filmed. This was as much to do with cheap filming costs as it was to do with the area itself, but it served nonetheless to promote the Costa Brava to the world. Today the Costa Brava is a beach holiday destination with developed tourist enclaves, while at the same time offering plenty of unspoilt & often rugged countryside to explore. This aspect proves particularly popular amongst adventure tourists who come here for hiking, mountin biking, rock climbing, & other outdoor pursuits. In addition the peaks of the Pyrenees mountain range offer excellent skiing opportunity in the shape of Andorra, & nearby Barcelona is one of the world's most popular city break destinations. The Empuries archaeological site is of great importance historically as it is one of the best examples of an ancient Greek & Roman trading settlement rolled into one. The castle of Sant Ferran in the town of Figueres is a first class tourist attraction. Santa Maria de Castello d'Empuries The parish church of Santa Maria is widely thought of as being one of the most important religious constructions in the province. The lake near the town of Banyoles covers a surface area of more than a million square metres & is shaped like a figure of eight. On the outskirts of the town of Serinya is an important archeological cave complex dating back to the Paleolithic period (some 200,000 years ago). The Active Natura Adventure Park is an large installation offering a wide variety of outdoor activities for adults & children over 1.5 metres in height.
