Costa Dorada

The Costa Dorada (or Costa Daurada) is often referred to as Spain's gold coast; this is largely due to its 150 kilometres of golden sandy beaches. Popular holiday resorts grace its shores, receiving high numbers of visitors every year due to their safe, clean waters & well organised services & amenities. Also present are city break destinations such as Tarragona & Sitges; famed for their historical attractions & liberal attitudes. The countryside is equally praised, with many acres of national parkland, mountainous terrain, & steep valleys carpeted by dense forest.

The Costa Dorada is located in the North-East of Spain, within the autonomous region of Catalonia. It borders the Costa Garraf (Barcelona province) to the north, & stretches down to the Costa del Azahar in the south. It is serviced by two international airports; that of Barcelona (BCN) & another at Reus (REU).

As mentioned above the Costa has been popular as a tourist destination for many years. Resorts like Salou or Cambrils cater for families & are very child friendly, Sitges on the other hand is a good example of one of the Costa's more sophisticated destinations. Additionally there are a multitude of adventure sports companies offering a wealth of energetic holiday pursuits which include trekking, rock climbing, gorge scrambling/walking, potholing, mountain bike hire & trail rides, horse riding, quad bike safaris, 4x4 routes, hangliding, canoeing, archery, paint-balling, & more.

Residential tourism has also found its way to the Costa Dorada, though to a lesser extent perhaps than in some of Spain's more southern regions. The result is an expanding international resident community. However the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive, & many fiestas take place throughout town calendars. Local cuisine is another bonus, with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside middle to high end restaurants.

The climate in the Costa Dorada is welcoming for the majority of the year; highs reach 28°C during the hottest months, & average temperatures are at 7-10°C during the winter. However visitors should be aware that temperatures are 2-4°C cooler if venturing inland. The higher altitudes experienced in parts of the region also lead to increased rainfall, though this is mainly confined to the spring & autumn.
