Costa Dorada History The history of the Costa Dorada is inextricably linked with that of its primary city, Tarragona. This strategically important city was established by the Romans as a military base at around the time of the second Punic War against Carthage. Tarragona remained an important base long after the war ended & served as the Roman capital of Hispania Citerior; the northern-most of the two regions the peninsular was split into for ease of government. This caused the city to grow considerably, both in populace & in its role as a port city. Today Tarragona still bears much of the fruit of its former heyday. Many Roman ruins & monuments have been preserved & it is still Spain's second most important commercial port. For more information see our Tarragona History document.
