Costa Tropical Tourist / Tourism Tourism in the Costa Tropical & Granada province is in contrast with other parts of the country in that it is not the coastline which attracts the most visitors. Instead it is the city of Granada, with its ancient Moorish origins (including the infamous Alhambra citadel) that draws the most crowds. Another major tourist attraction for the area is the Sierra Nevada; Spain's southernmost ski resort & the location for several beautiful national parks. This means the Costa Tropical is a good place to come to get away from the crowds normally associated with other Spanish coastal regions. As the last bastion of the Moorish empire in Spain the whole area is dotted with remnants of this part of Spain's history. There are many "sugar cube" white villages perched on the foothills of the mountains, with their original (central) layouts largely preserved. Many monuments of Arab rule also prevail, from castles & fortifications, to gardens, watchtowers, & of course agriculture; as the Arabs imported much of Spain's most successful produce, as well as the techniques needed to grow it. In recent years the Costa Tropical has been affected by residential tourism, & it has expanded its resident international community; though a great deal less than in other parts of Spain. However the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive, & many fiestas (festivals) take place throughout the year. The cuisine is another major bonus with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside middle to high end restaurants.
