Espanya Square The Plaza de Espanya (Espanya Square) is located at the foot of Montjuic in the centre of Barcelona. The square was once the main entrance to the city, & public hangings were held here with the corpses displayed to ward off criminal types. It was not until the Ciutadella was built in the 18th century that they were moved. In 1908 the area began to be urbanised as part of the city extension, with work completing in 1929. Today the Plaza de Espanya is dominated by its central fountain, designed in modernist style by Josep Maria Jujol, who often worked with Gaudi. On one side of the sqaure is the Avinguda de la Reina Maria Christina, often used for trade fairs. Flanking the Avinguda are two 150 foot tall towers, modeled on the bell tower of the San Marco square in Venice. At the other end of the square is the bullring, known as the Arenas de Barcelona. Bullfighting never really caught on in Catalonia, & as a result there are plans in place to turn the bullring into a shopping centre.
