Garachico in Tenerife
Garachico was originally Tenerife Capital, the modest fishing village with little cottages and large townhouses lining the small cobbled streets that along with the pretty harbour make up the town. The harbour in Garachico was the most important port in Tenerife in the sixteenth century due its export of the loal produce. Until, however a series of natural disasters happened, firstly in 1645 huge volcanic landslides, killed over one hundred people and wiped out forty boats, then in 1706 the volcano above the town erupted which sent two slow moving lava rivers crept into town, filling the harbour and effectively rendering it useless to large scale commercial shipping. The lava that flowed into the sea during the 1706 disaster, formed several large rock pools, which are now enjoyed, by visitors and locals alike for bathing in at low tide. The town itself was rebuilt mainly during the 18th Century and has many of its buildings with wooden canarian balconies and cobbled streets intact, which lend it a quiet, cultured air, that is lacking in other towns on the island.
