Gay Sitges Sitges has a vibrant gay scene, & is widely known as one of Europe's favorite gay friendly destinations. Aside from during the months of July & August (when the majority of visitors consist of Spanish families) the gay scene dominates, with a wealth of gay friendly/orientated businesses present; these include hotels & alternative accommodation types, shops, bars, clubs, restaurants, saunas, cruises, & much more. Of course Sitges is also one of Spain's most chic coastal towns, in terms of it's appearance, infrastructure, & attractions. So aside from the town's more hedonistic attractions there is much to see & do that is more cultured. After all many of Barcelona's most wealthy & influential people have historically always owned properties in Sitges. Gay tourism developed naturally in Sitges as a result of the inherently welcoming & liberal attitude of the town. This was caused by both an influx of liberal ideas from the Catalan capital (Barcelona), & as a kickback against the constant pressure from Spanish government (under the Franco dictatorship) to confirm to conservative ideals. Sitges began to be seen as a place to escape to, drawing visitors from all over Spain & earning it an international reputation.
