Girona

Girona has been an important Spanish city for varying reasons throughout its history. Like other ancient Catalonian towns it was first settled by Iberians, & did not earn it's name until the Romans arrived & constructed a citadel, which they named Gerunda. The Visigoths ruled briefly  until the arrival of the Moors, which were in turn expelled by the armies of Charlemagne in 785. He made Girona one of the 14 countships of Catalonia & with it came extensive lands. Girona took on administrative responsibilities & was heavily fortified as part of the buffer zone set up against the Moorish empire to its south.

Girona's military importance continued long after the threat of the Moors had been lifted. As the importance of Barcelona grew so did Girona's strategic importance as a frontier town to protect it from invading armies crossing the Pyrenees. This role continued until the Napoleonic wars, when the city earned the title "city of a thousand sieges" after successfully beating off the French invaders. Eventually (after a lengthy siege) the city was defeated & its walls partially demolished.

The 12th century had seen a significant enlargement of Girona's Jewish community. This led to to the creation of a Jewish quarter (known as the Call) as well as important learning centres. However their history in Girona was to be relatively short lived, as all Jews were either converted to Christianity or expelled from Spain under order of Spain's Catholic kings in 1492.

The presence of such varied rulers & inhabitants left behind a cultural & architectural heritage distinct from that of many other Spanish towns & cities. This is further accentuated by Girona's size, as in 2005 there were still well under 100,000 inhabitants. This means Girona is easily traversed on foot, & as a result a number of popular walking routes/tours have been created that join together the cities main sights & attractions. These include the Call (old Jewish quarter), which is one of the best preserved in Europe & certainly one of the most beautiful parts of Girona. Some Moorish landmarks are still present, including the bath-house, gardens, & a wider influence in Girona's overall architectural style. Churches, convents, monasteries, & a cathedral can also be found; many of which are very old & of historical importance. Finally the modernist movement left it's mark, with a number of fine urban palaces dotted around the centre, each of them unique in character & style.
