Girona Tourist / Tourism

Throughout its history Girona has been an important settlement. Its strategic military importance led to it's occupation by varied & powerful rulers, which resulted in the construction of impressive structures & an influx of foreign ideas. Collectively they left behind a cultural & architectural heritage distinct from that of many other Spanish towns & cities. This is further accentuated by Girona's size, as in 2005 there were still well under 100,000 inhabitants.

Girona's size allows for sight-seeing on foot, & as a result a number of popular walking routes/tours have been created that join together the cities main sights & attractions. These include the Call (old Jewish quarter), which is one of the best preserved in Europe & certainly one of the most beautiful parts of Girona. Some Moorish landmarks are still present, including the bath-house, gardens, & a wider influence in overall architectural style. Churches, convents, monasteries, & a cathedral can also be found; many of which are very old & of historical importance. Finally the modernist movement left it's mark, with a number of fine urban palaces dotted around the centre, each of them unique in character & style.

Girona's proximity to both Barcelona & the shores of the Costa Brava guarantees its place on the tourist trail. It is a popular day-trip/weekend-break destination & has developed an excellent range of cafes, restaurants, & retail outlets to cater for its visitors. Sensible town planning has ensured that Girona's attractions & areas of antiquity have not suffered at the hands of modernisation, & tourist income has been used to fund the further reconstruction & improvement of such sites.
