Gran Canaria is still one of the top holiday destination for Gay people, down in the south it caters for day and night! Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles being the biggest gay resort in Europe!
With the impressive Maspalomas beach, you can find 250 hectares of sand dunes that are right next to the sea, some find it the most beautiful beach on the island! Maspalomas Beach is divided into four sections, The first section being the best for the children and families, the second and the fourth are normally designated nudist beaches and the third is popular for the gay community. In contrast to Playa del Inglés, it is renowned for its daylight offer with the famous gay beach and the amazing sand dunes. Maspalomas offers seclusion in abundance. There's a gay section at the rather windy beachfront, but there's also a large gay zone in the vast dunes behind it. It's no coincidence that the gay area is adjacent to the naturist area, knowing that both groups crave privacy and many gay men like to sunbathe naked.
At night the Yumbo centre in Playa del Ingles is the place to be! During the day and early evening this centre is alive with families and tourists shopping and eating, but at about 10.30pm there is a noticeable change round where's those families retire to bed and the gay community settle in! Although a few straight people stay and mingle and watch the drag shows at Cafe Labelle. Although most gay men prefer the action at Centre Stage where every night is Julie Andrews night!
The nightlife doesn't really get going until midnight, so it wise to join in the locals and have a afternoon siesta! The international bars on the top floor fill up around this time where the bars pump out the latest Euro-hits! The 'in' crowd seem to move round starting at Tubos, then on to Mykonos before hitting Metropole Disco!
There are plenty of bars and restaurants here that cater for Gays, whichever your preference in music and style - the crowd is younger upstairs than in the bars downstairs, which even has a gay bar for the pensioners at Na Und!
At about 4am the bars upstairs start to wind down this is when the large disco bars kick in, XL and Kings - you really haven't done gay Gran Canaria until you partied the night away at Kings until 6am!!
The established resorts of Gran canaria really offer facilities of a massive scale for gay visitors, with its sheer size it creates a safe and welcoming atmosphere. With very rarely if any reported homophobia or violence against gays!
