Gran Canaria Walking Gran Canaria is the third largest island of the Archipelago of the Canary Islands and has a beautiful scenery that is diverse in landscape for walking! With the arid but spectacular canyons of the South and the lush greener landscape of the North combined together make Gran Canaria a walkers paradise! An interesting feature of Gran Canaria is the 'caminos reales' - the royal roads. These are paved tracks which are being restored. They are called the royal roads - Caminos Reals because they were built by the king after the Spanish conquest to connect remote mountain villages with the coast. Gran Canaria Tourist board are now using these paths as a way of attracting walkers to the island. Walking on these trails is a pleasure. Some of the attractions you will see whilst trekking over the island include the magnificent Barranco de Fataga, Roque Nublo - from here you we be able to see amazing views over the mountains of the Canary Islands including Snow capped Mount Tiede in Tenerife! Pozo De Las Nieves, is another which is the islands second highest peak at 6,317 ft, Pico De Las Nieves the islands highest point, The old Guanche cemetery, Montana Inagua, El Laurelillo ridge, Casas de Inagua ruins plus many more breathtaking views, wonderful canyons, little villages that lay hidden away, valleys and rocky peaks! Being a reasonably small island, it is easy to get away from the main tourist resorts, there is a good bus service which can be used for some walks, although hiring a car gives you a certain amount of freedom. There are lots of walking excursions available too with English, along with other language speaking guides. Or maybe you'd prefer to go alone? The choice is yours!! You can get maps from the tourist office's these are free and generally better than the ones that you find in books! Walks are reasonably well waymarked when they leave the road they are more so though, along as you keep your eyes peeled and use the tourist walking map then it is straightforward enough!!!
