Gran Canaria Water Sports

If you are looking for more of an active holiday and are into your watersports then look no further, Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands is a brilliant place to go, with over 236km of coastline and almost 60km of that being beaches or various descriptions there are plenty of places for the variety of Water sports including; Surfing, Windsurfing, bodyboarding, deep sea fishing, parascending, jet and water skiing, great coves for snorkeling, shipwrecks and marine reservations for diving and sailing!

Gran Canaria has held the PWA World Classic Grand Prix. With several windsurfing and diving school's if your a beginner or want to brush up on your skills you can. There are also many diving schools across the island in the main resorts where you can take diving course's from beginners to the more advanced.

Bodyboarding and surfing are best practised at the north of Gran Canarias island, between Las Palmas and Galdar. With constant on shore winds it is perfect conditions as waves can get upto five metres high! There are several places you can hire the necessary equipment if you don't want to bring your own or if you don't have one! There is also a few good places with good surfing and bodyboarding conditions along the east coast, around Arinaga and in the south between Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas.

One of the best places in the world for Windsurfing is Gran Canaria! It can be practised all along the coast from the east to the south, but there are very good conditions at Playa de las Canteras in Las Palmas and in the northwest of Gáldar. If you are a beginner at windsurfing then its probably best if you stick to the more sheltered harbours like those found in Puerto Rico and Puerto de Morgan! But if you want to see or join in with the top windsurfers head to Pozo Isquierdo or Playa de Vargas which is the venue for the PWA Wave Classic Grand Prix. Winds can get upto 60 km/h per hour!

Parascending, jet skiing, water skiing, a trip on a speedboat and other active water sports are mostly offered in the main southern resorts. You will even find the ever popular banana boats, pedal boats and sea kayaks that are also available for hire and are a good way of getting out on the water with the kids!

If you are wanting to do a diving course whilst staying in Gran Canaria, finding a fully certified diving school in any of the main coastal resorts will not be a problem as  there are plenty! Most offer beginner and advanced courses for the more experienced divers and most also rent out diving equipment too! If diving in Gran Canaria you shouldn't miss out on the Marine reserve just off the east coast at Playa del Cabron in El Cabron, the diversity of fish and marine vegetation here is amazing! For the more experienced diver there are two wrecks to explore in Pasitio Blanco which also has ideal conditions for underwater photography too! In the northwest of Sardina and La Isleta there are also some fantastic diving sites.

Sailing in Gran Canaria is a sailor’s dream, during the months of April to October even more so, with some of the best practicing conditions! Local sailing clubs have produced several Olympic champions.  There are sailing centres at Las Palmas, here the annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) departs from.  Also in the south coast, specifically Puerto Rico, Pasito Blanco, Arguineguin and Puerto de Mogán. If you head to any resort by the sea and you will easily find a school or company that will provide you with the right equipment you need to start sailing and tuition.

If you enjoy Deep-sea fishing and Big-Game Fishing, then this is the place to come – especially during the main season from May to September. All of the main resorts in Gran Canaria have several companies that offer deep-sea fishing, although the best places to set out from are in Puerto de Mogán, Pasito Blanco and Puerto Rico - With Puerto Rico’s more than 50 deep-sea fishing world records saying everything!! The main species to be found off the coast in these regions are several varieties of tuna and marlin, swordfish and, occasionally, sharks. There is also some good bottom-fishing available all year round.
