House of the Dead Another unique construct in Salamanca is the Casa de las Muertes (or House of the Dead). This is a grand and beautiful building adorned with coats of arms, stone medallions, elaborate detail, and an impressive wrought iron balcony. The house gets it's name from the unusual carving of skulls on the stone brackets featuring on it's main facade. This created much gossip and legend over the ages, at one point leading the property to be unsalable and in a state of disrepair. Gladly the year 1963 brought restoration of the building and it is now a popular attraction.
