| Ibiza History It is believed that the first people to set foot on Ibiza island did so in 5000 BC there is an wealth of ancient remnants to back this up. Ibiza town was founded by the Carthaginians in 654 BC as major trading port. After the Carthaginians followed the Romans who built the roads, then preceded the Visigoths, then the Muslims; their supremacy continued for more than three centuries. You can still see this in todays culture in terms of architecture, and local (traditional) dress. After the Muslims followed the Christians. During the 15th Century Ibiza island fell on hardship and misfortune; habitually raided by pirates and segregated from mainland Spain there were regular food shortages. During the 16th century the Turks attacked Menorca; this is when Ibiza Citys walls were built. Ibiza's luck turned in the 1950's when the tourist industry kicked in, and consequently Ibiza is now one of the most affluent areas of Spain.
