Ibiza Tourist Information

Ibiza is the smallest of the four Balearic Islands and the closest to mainland Spain.  The Balearic Islands consist of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera.  Ibiza lies off the south east coast of mainland Spain in the Mediterranean Sea.  From the mainland you can catch a boat from either Denia, Valencia, Tarragona, or Barcelona.

Each summer the island is visited by a vast number of multinational tourists. However this is not surprising considering Ibiza is one of the few places in the world that is protected by World Heritage (UNESCO).

Europe's leading and most prominent nightclubs are in Ibiza.  Annually thousand of clubbers flock to the Island.  Es Paradis opens at the end of May, Space on the first Sunday June, Amnesia on the second week June, Manumission and Cream on the last week June, so on and so forth, all of the bars and clubs stagger closing throughout September.  There are three main areas to Ibiza night life; the harbour, San Antonio West End, and Sunset Strip.  There are no dress codes in the bars and clubs, people generally dress up, and the more outrageous outfits often get in free of charge.  Clubs are open from 00.00-06.00 and the queues are huge from 01.30-03.00.

Throughout the countryside there is an incessant fragrance of pine, orange, olive, almond, and fig groves.  Stunning rolling hills, overlooking the cobalt blue Mediterranean sea, and picturesque beaches.  There is plenty of fresh decent food; everything from a effortless tortilla (Spanish omelette) to hand picked fresh lobster.  And surprisingly a lot of historical sights including; cathedrals, ruins, and quaint traditional fishing villages are still present.  Pure and simple Spanish culture in abundance.

Ibiza Island has over 50 beaches stretching 18km.  Sailing and Scuba Diving is plentiful there are many schools throughout the island, please see Ibiza beaches of more information.

There are five counties in Ibiza; Eivissa (the capital), Sant Joan, Sant Josep, Sant Antoni, and Santa Eularia, stretching just 40km long, and 572km sq.

It is believed that the first people to set foot on Ibiza island did so in 5000 BC there is an wealth of ancient remnants to back this up.  Ibiza town was founded by the Carthaginians in 654 BC as major trading port.  After the Carthaginians followed the Romans who built the roads, then preceded the Visigoths, then the Muslims; their supremacy continued for more than three centuries. You can still see this in todays culture in terms of architecture, and local (traditional) dress.  After the Muslims followed the Christians.  During the 15th Century Ibiza island fell on hardship and misfortune; habitually raided by pirates and segregated from mainland Spain there were regular food shortages.  During the 16th century the Turks attacked Menorca; this is when Ibiza Citys walls were built.  Ibiza's luck turned in the 1950's when the tourist industry kicked in,  and consequently Ibiza is now one of the most affluent areas of Spain.

The best time to holiday in Ibiza is from May and October although the clubbing season doesn't kick off until high season; from June to September.  From London the approximate flying time is 2hrs and 2 ½hrs from Manchester.  Now that the budget airlines fly to Ibiza it can often be cheaper to fly than to catch a train for a short break across England.  The time zone GMT+1 (one hour ahead of England).  The currency is in € Euros.  They main language is Spanish, although English is widely spoken.

Whether visiting Ibiza for a wild week away with friends, or a relaxing break with the  family, this Island will ensure you have fun.
