Italica Roman Ruins The Italica ruins were once the site of a great Roman city founded in 206BC by general Scipio. After a long war the Carthaginians had eventually been defeated, and he needed a place to settle wounded veteran soldiers. Italica was founded, officially the first Roman colony in southern Spain, and was to grow to great importance. As it's population increased the great Roman infrastructure followed, with paved roads, aqueducts, numerous villas and homes of important families, bath-houses, and a large 20,000 seater amphitheater; the third largest in the empire. No less than two Emperors (Trajan and Hadrian) were born here, which gives testament to the city's importance. The ruins of Italica were first excavated in 1781, and due to the sheer scale of the project are still a work in progress. Just 15 minutes outside Seville by bus they are a great day out for those interested in the subject matter. It is possible to walk the streets of the ancient city, taking in typical and noble households (some with mosaics and other unique features intact), as well as temples and other government structures. For day-trippers there are several cafes and restaurants in the town of Santiponce, which overlies part of the site. It is also worth noting that Seville's Museum of Archaeology holds many collections of artefacts discovered at the Italica site. Seville Tourist Office TEL +34 954 592915 FAX +34 954 590919
