La Barceloneta The La Barceloneta residential area was constructed in the 18th century to rebuild the Ribera part of the city that was demolished to make way for the Ciutadella fortress imposed by Phillip V. It forms the old fishermans quarter for the city & is located around the Port Vell harbour in central Barcelona. In recent times preparation for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics saw wide scale regeneration of many of the city's (often run down) sea front zones, La Barceloneta was one of these. This saw the city opened up to the sea, with the Port Vell harbour transformed, & La Barceloneta turned into a neighbourhood of beaches. Though a relatively recent addition many of the beaches here have won the European blue flag award for cleanliness, & are an excellent addition to the city's sea front. A cable car runs from La Barceloneta to Montjuic Castle, which offers spectacular views of the city & surrounding area.
