La Pedrera La Pedrera (also known as Casa Mila) was Antoni Gaudi's last great work before dedicating all his time to the Sagrada Familia. It is considered by some to be his finest creation. The work was commissioned by Pere Mila Camps, who impressed by Gaudi's Casa Batllo asked him to create a large building of rental apartments on his new plot on the Paseo de Gracia. Gaudi designed a fantastic building with an unusual undulating facade, many arches, & a staggered roof with strangely shaped chimneys & vents. There were many disputes with the city council during & after its construction, mainly relating to its breaking many of Barcelona's city ordnance rules. But it was eventually decided that due to its artistic value it should be left alone. in 1984 La Pedrera was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. The La Pedrera building is now owned by the Caixa de Catalunya, who have opened both the roof & the attic to the public. Here visitors can see an exhibition of Gaudi's works. The rooftop provides excellent views of the roof & out across the city, outdoor concerts are often put on here in the summer months. Though some of the apartments are still privately owned, one is open for viewing. Finally the main floor has been given over as an exhibition hall, housing many temporary exhibitions on varying subjects.
