There is enormous variety of plant life on the island of Lanzarote, although the island is relatively dry, volcanic and barren. Many people that visit the island take advantage of the many excursions that are organised to take in the immense Flora and Fauna! This means the Plant species and the animal species.
The Jardin de Cactus - Cactus Garden - is a tourist attraction that can be found on the outskirts of Guatiza, on the road towards Mala. It is the last work of the infamous Cesar Manrique, it is home to over 1,400 varieties of species of cactus among which there you will find examples of Manrique's lava sculptures. It is in this area where during more than a century the cochineal beetle has been cultivated - an insect which lives in the cactus and whose larva are used to produce the valuable natural colorant, cochineal.
Manrique has creatively arranged this garden to enhance the extensive cactus collection, and tourist can can appreciate the beautifully restored windmill - restored in 1973 by Manrique. This produced corn flour, known as gofio, and was consumed by the islanders.
In the Jardin de Cactus there is an abandoned volcanic ash - known as rofe - quarry in the shape of an amphitheatre has been used, in the terraces of this you can admire more than 10,000 different kinds of cacti from the Canary Islands, America and Madagascar.
In the centre of the Jardin de Cactus, stick up stone monoliths that complement the design of the garden.
The is a Bar and Restaurant in the Garden - these are open from 10am till 5pm. There is also a Souvenir Shop and Secure Parking. The Gardens and Museum is open from 10am until 6pm.
