L'Eixample L'Eixample is the part of Barcelona that was deigned in the middle of the 19th century. It is the result of the urban extension project spurred by the rocketing population levels that resulted from Barcelona's industrialisation. At the time of the expansion both the city & its bourgeoisie were immensely rich (Barcelona was the first city in Spain to industrialise). This is clearly evident in the planning of the Eixample quarter, & in the buildings & monuments it plays host to. The Sagrada Familia (the city's most popular attraction) is located here, as is La Pedrera, & many other modernist works by Gaudi & his contemporaries. It is these unique modernist attractions that stand Barcelona aside from other European cities, making L'Eixample an essential stop for any visiting tourist. Although Barcelona boasts dining & entertainment options in all of its central zones, it is the Eixample area that holds the crown for hosting the most restaurants, bars, & nightclubs. Also located in L'Eixample is the heart of Barcelona's gay community, the so called Gayxample. Found around Calle Balmes & Calle Diputacio, there are many gay bars & shops.
