Lloret de Mar Lloret de Mar is perhaps the best known coastal town on the Costa Brava, & certainly one of the most popular. This is largely due to the tourist trade, which swells the town's population from around 25,000 to over 200,000 in the summer months. The reason Lloret de Mar became such an attractive destination has a lot to do with it's 7 kilometres of pristine coastline & blue flag sandy beaches flanked by countryside of outstanding beauty. It was this natural attraction that was first recognised back in the 1950's when Spain's central government decided that Lloret de Mar (together with a few other towns on the Costa), was an ideal location for development in order to attract tourism from northern Europe. Large numbers of hotels & apartment complexes were built, wide stretches of coastline adapted, & municipal facilities improved. Soon after works were completed fishing fell behind tourism as the principal business. Aside from the hotels, apartment complexes, swathes of restaurants, & many bars Lloret de Mar has a lot to offer. After all it has a history dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, even if it didn't get it's name & recognition as a self sufficient town until 1001AD. Two good examples of this heritage come in the form of the Roman Sepulchral (a 2nd century Roman burial tower), & the Santa Clotilde Gardens (fantastic modernist & romantic gardens designed in Italian Renaissance style). Lloret de Mar also has some of the best sports facilities around, with almost all types catered for in the town & a good selection of golf courses outside of it. The varied countryside surrounding Lloret de Mar is favoured amongst those who travel to the area to participate in adventure sports, from hiking & mountain biking to rock climbing & skiing. In recent years Lloret de Mar has expanded its resident international community, with a steady influx of ex pats arriving from other European countries. However the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive & many fiestas (festivals) take place throughout its calendar (some of which are a real spectacle & well worth a look). The cuisine is another major bonus with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside the middle to high end restaurants. Plenty of shopping opportunities also exist; ranging from souvenir shops selling local goods & handicrafts to designer label fashion outlets. A weekly municipal market is held every Tuesday on Carrer dels Mestres & the side streets around the sports centre. The climate in Lloret de Mar is in the main welcoming all year round. With average highs of 29°C (82°F) in the summer months & 13°C (55°F) in the winter, it is possible to enjoy an outdoor life at any time of the year. However be aware during the winter season low temperatures can be a good deal cooler than in Spain's southern regions.
