Madrid Tourist Information

Madrid has been the capital of Spain since the late 16th Century, it took over from Seville because quite simply Madrid is in the center of Spain.  Madrid is 400 square miles (600km²) the largest city in Spain, situated on the river Manzanares which separates the city by old and new.  Madrid is architecturally unattractive however it makes cities such as London look unexciting.

There is an abundance to see and do in Madrid from the Royal Palace of Madrid with nearly 3000 rooms, and a fabulous collection of Spanish Armour.  To a stroll in the Madrid Park with its statues, fountains, lakes, and even puppet shows for the kids.  To one of the many museums such as the Prado Museum; paradise for Spanish Art enthusiasts and much more.  If you are short for time there are many bus tours lasting a couple of hours and squeezing many of the top sights in Madrid.

The nightlife in Madrid is some of Spain's finest, often not kicking off until midnight and lasting until 6am there is something for everyone.  There are plenty of gay and lesbian exclusive bars, straight bars, nightclubs, salsa clubs, flamenco clubs, and jazz clubs to name a few.  There are numerous types of Spanish restaurants due to the Madrilenos virtually all being Spanish immigrants so you can sample tastes from all over the country, plus many world food restaurants, the only area Madrid restaurants lack in is Vegetarian.  The vast majority of Madrid Restaurants and Madrid Cafes are children friendly.

Madrid is famous for its Football Club; Real Madrid, they have won the League 29 times (as of 2006), and the European Cup 9 times (as of 2006).  Real Madrid's home games are played at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, it is one of the best football stadiums in the world, rated a 5 star by UEFA along with Wembley in London, and Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.  There are many household names playing for Real Madrid including the famous English ex Manchester United's David Beckham.

The best time to visit Madrid is late spring and early Autumn when the weather is fine, but not oppressive.  During May is the most fun as on the 2nd May is the Fiesta de la Comunidad de Madrid and on 15th May is the Fiestas de San Isidro some of the largest fiestas annually in Madrid.
