Malgrat The Mediterranean town of Malgrat is situated on the Costa Maresme (part of Barcelona's municipality), even though it is often more readily associated with the coastal resorts of the Costa Brava. It's background lies with the fishing trade, though today Malgrat is a modern tourist destination well known for it's sandy beaches. It is situated some 35 km south of Girona & 60 km north of Barcelona. The arrival of the tourist trade in Malgrat brought with it many hotel & apartment complexes. Tourists need entertaining & to cope with the influx numerous cafes, restaurants, & bars opened up alongside modern retail outlets. However this charming little town has retained much identity, with old the town centre hosting examples of modernist architecture, alongside older churches & squares. Additionally just outside Malgrat is a beautiful mountainous region favoured amongst those who travel to the area to participate in adventure sports; these vary from hiking & mountain biking to rock climbing & (a little farther on) skiing. In more recent years Malgrat has expanded, with an influx of people arriving/buying second homes; mainly from European countries & other parts of Spain. However the town still remains smaller & less brash than many of it's coastal neighbors. Many fiestas (or festivals) take place throughout the town calendar. The cuisine is another major bonus with affordable good food available everywhere. The climate in Malgrat is (in the main) welcoming all year round. With average highs of 31°C during the summer months & 16°C  in the winter, it is possible to enjoy an outdoor life at any time of the year.
