Malgrat Fiestas Spanish towns & cities are famous for their festivals (or fiestas) & Malgrat is no exception. There are plenty of events throughout the town calendar, see below for some of the most popular:-
A popular event is the Fiesta de San Juan (feast of St. John) on the 23rd of June. The fiesta originates from pagan tradition, though given Christian sanction, & is essentially a celebration of the midsummer solstice. Bonfires are erected on the beach, accompanied by much music, singing, & dancing. Drink flows & food is widely available. Events culminate with raucous fireworks, though in reality (as the 24th is a public holiday) the party goes on pretty much all night. September 11th commemorates the Catalan defeat at the hands of the Spanish army of Castile in 1714. From this day on Catalan rights & laws were abolished, & the fiesta is seen as a re-vindication of this event. From the 3rd-8th of December the Fiesta Major de Sant Nicolau a Malgrat is held. This is the towns most important celebration encompassing cultural activities, musical shows, children's sports/games, parades of figurines, fireworks, & much dancing, singing, eating, & drinking.
Precise dates cannot be given for the above festivities due to the ever changing fiesta calendar. The best advice we can give for those planning their holiday at fiesta time is to contact the Malgrat tourist office. Malgrat Tourist Information Telephone +34 937 610 082
