Maritime Museum The Maritime Museum is located in the Port Vell harbour area, at the bottom of the La Rambla boulevard, & next to the Barceloneta fisherman's quarter. It inhabits part of the ancient Royal Shipyards of Barcelona; designed as a dockyard for galleys & to serve the war fleet of the medieval Empire of Aragon, of which Barcelona was the capital city. The Royal Shipyards building is one of the most impressive Gothic structures in the city, & an attraction in itself. The museum has been open since 1941, though then an altogether much smaller affair. Since then enlargement, the gathering of new material to add to its collections, & restoration of the architectural complex have been top priorities. The Maritime Museum includes collection of several historic boats, navigations instruments, model ships, ex-votos, paintings, figureheads, nautical cartography, & much more. Additionally there is a shop & cafe-restaurant on site.
