Mataro Mataro is the capital of the Maresme region/county within Barcelona province. It has a population of approximately 115,000 & is located on the shores of the Mediterranean. It dates back to Roman times & has some archealogical remains to prove this, also present are several ornate old buildings, like it's town hall & church. Mataro was also the site of the first railway in Spain, linking it with Barcelona & showing Catalonia's leadership in Spanish industry. The town has a long standing seafaring tradition, & boasts a well tended sandy seafront with a nice marina & promenade. Beaches here are often less crowded that that of those farther north in the more touristic areas.
