| Menorca Tourist Information Menorca (which is also known as Minorca) lies of the south east coast of mainland Spain in the Mediterranean. There are four Balearic Islands, Menorca is the second largest and the least overrun of the Balearics. Its sister islands are Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. Menorca is not renowned for its night life like Ibiza. However there are many tranquil holiday resorts along the south coast of Menorca and lots of traditional fishing villages along the northern side of the island. There is a contrast in the terrain; on the south of Menorca it is quite dry and flat with sandy beaches, however on the north side there are green rolling hills with rugged rocky coastline. Allot of Menorca is a biosphere reserve and protected by UNESCO so there is plenty of natural beauty including pine forests, grazing cattle, all overlooking the cobalt Mediterranean sea. There is tones to do in Menorca from visiting the museums, markets, and historical sights. To exploring the beaches, to taking an island tour, to playing golf, riding horses, scuba diving, sailing and much more. The local cuisine is very good, the fresh fish brought in that day from the fisherman is to die for, and the ambience in the laid back Spanish bars and Restaurants is something England just doesn't have. The capital is of Menorca is called Mao (in Spanish Mahon). Located at the eastern side of the island with a busy port, and many unusual architectural details. Ciutadella is the second largest town in Menorca situated at the opposite side of the island to Mao connected by the main road C-721 it has many narrow winding cobbled streets with historical buildings and churches. Each town has a fiesta annually to celebrate the feast day of its patron saint. The locals are welcoming to anyone who wants to join in. A typical fiesta is celebrated annually and usually local businesses close, the roads are blocked off, and a street party is set up with food, drink and music in abundance. People of all ages join the party in singing and dancing. Then in the evening the there is usually a fair ground, and often on the last night there will be a fireworks display. Sometimes there is even a bank holiday the day after the fiesta for the town to recover. I would recommend going to a fiesta as the Spanish really know how to party. There are around 100 beaches in 216km of coastline in Menorca each with something for everyone. It is worth hiring a car to explore the beaches with caves, or the huge sweeping unpopulated golden sandy beaches, or the busy beaches with lots of water sports, restaurants, and interesting people watching. The airport in Menorca is small and located 8km south west of the capital. To fly from London it takes around 2hrs and 2½hrs from Manchester. Now that the budget airlines fly to Menorca it can often be cheaper to fly than to catch a train for a short break across England. The best time to visit Menorca is between May and October, high season is from June to September. Menorca is slightly wetter and a few degrees cooler than the other Balearic Islands, this can be a blessing. More information about Menorca:
