Mesquita The Mesquita (or the Great Aljama Mosque of Cordoba) is one of the most beautiful examples of Moorish design in all of Spain. It was commissioned by the emir Abderrahman I in the year 785AD, though added to and altered in the 200 years that followed. Accessed by an orange tree courtyard it is an immensely intricate and impressive structure, with no less than 850 columns, along with double arches, and many Byzantine mosaics. Some elements, such as it's Mihrab, are considered to be among the best in the Muslim world. Portions of the Mesquita's design were compromised by later Christian architects, though the reality is that the early interferences may have actually saved the Mesquita from worse fortunes in the long run. A Cathedral was built inside the Moorish structure when Cordoba fell to the Christians, and was expanded upon in later years. One thing is for sure, Cordoba's mosque has been an object of marvel and wonderment for the last 1000 years. It remains one of the most emblematic symbols of the power wielded by the ancient Arabs, and is widely considered to be one of the world's most beautiful buildings. This is further enhanced by its inclusion on the UNESCO world heritage list. Cordoba Tourist Office TEL +34 957 491678 FAX +34 957 475485
