Motril Tourist / Tourism Tourism in Motril revolves mainly around the influx of Spanish nationals to the town during the summer months. Although tourists from other European nations have long visited, their presence is still relatively minimal in comparison with other resorts in Andalucia. Motril is more than just a popular tourist destination, it is a working city with a busy commercial port. Motril first prospered as Granada's nearest port, & was further enriched at the height of the sugar trade in Spain, when many municipal buildings were added; beautifying the city. This ends an ambience to Motril not shared by many other coastal resorts. Needless to say there are a more than adequate selection of bars, clubs, & other venues present to help entertain the masses. For those looking to venture farther afield there is the city of Granada with its ancient Moorish origins (including the infamous Alhambra citadel) & the Sierra Nevada; Spain's southernmost ski resort & the location for several beautiful national parks. In recent years Motril has expanded its resident international community, though not nearly as much as towns in other parts of Andalucia. The fact that it is still mainly visited by Spanish nationals has had some bearing on this. As such the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive, & many fiestas (festivals) take place throughout the year. The cuisine is another major bonus with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside the middle to high end restaurants.
