Palau de la Musica Catalana The Palau de la Musica Catalana translates as the Palace of Catalan Music; & it is palace indeed. Its history begins in 1905, when its construction commenced at the behest of the Catalan Choiral Society (Orfeo Catala); consisting of 184 singers & 1,358 members. The work was undertaken by the esteemed architect Luis Domenech I Montaner & was finally inaugurated on the 9th of February 1908. Celebrated as a music centre of the highest calibre a season of events were hosted in the same year, including concerts by the Berlin Philarmonic with Richard Strauss. What was created in the building of the concert hall was not only a great expression of modernist architecure, but a work of art, & one of the world's most elaborate & acclaimed music venues. Montaner used some of the most famous artists & craftsmen of his time to accomplish his aim, & evidence of this can be seen throughout its structure & decoration. Although the Palau de la Musica Catalana is a tourist attraction in itself, offering guided tours of the most impressive rooms, it is also a fully functioning venue. The 20th century has seen renovation of its installations, & extension of its services, in order to bring it in line with the demands of a modern concert hall. Alongside world class musical acts of varying styles it now plays host to many social events, leisure activities, & business functions. On the 5th floor of the building is the library of the Orfeo Catala; a private library specialising in music, modernism, the Orfeo Catala, & the Palau itself. It was founded in 1891 & houses an array of information, quite unique in its content. The library is open (at appointment only) to members of the Orfeo Catala, professional musicians, & students. Material is generally not offered out on loan. UNESCO declared the Palau de la Musica Catalana a world heritage site in 1997.
